Flood spreading over central region

C T Online Desk: Flood was spreading over the central region of the country on Tuesday with the overall flood situation aggravated further in northern and northeastern regions.

Official sources said new areas of the central region were being flooded due to the onrush of water from upstream rivers.

The flooding in Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Netrokona may improve in the next 24 hours, said Arifuzzaman Bhuyan, executive engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

“The overall flood situation in Kishoreganj district may deteriorate,” he added.

During the period, the flood situation in Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jamalpur may remain steady while it may deteriorate slightly in Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail.

He further said the Teesta water level may flow close to the danger level in the next 24 hours.

“The flood situation in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Rangpur districts may remain steady.”

There is a chance of flooding in the low-lying areas of Faridpur, Shariatpur and Rajbari districts in next 24 hours, he said.

Heavy rain inBangladesh and different upstream Indian regions is less unlikely, the FFWC forecast.

The FFWC recorded that water of eight rivers was flowing above the danger level at 18 points on Tuesday morning.

The Brahmaputra was flowing 23cm above the danger level at Noonkhawa, 107cm above at Hatia, 57cm above at Chilmari and 58cm above at Fulchari point.

The Jamuna River was flowing 55, 59, 56, 49 and 35cm above of danger level at Bahadurabad, Sariakandi, Kazipur, Sirajganj and Porabari point, FFWC said.

The river Dharla was flowing 42cm above the danger level at Kurigram point, Ghagot was flowing 37cm above the danger mark at Gaibandha point, Surma was flowing 106, 41 and 27 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat, Sylhet and Sunamganj points.

Kushiyara river was flowing 184, and 63cm above the danger level at Amalshid and Sheola points, Khowai was flowing 5cm above the danger level at Balla point and Someswari rive was flowing 80cm above the danger level at Kalmakanda point.

Thousands of flood victims of various districts, including Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Lalmonirhat, Sherpur, Mymensingh, Moulvibazar, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Nilphamari, Sirajganj, Bogra, and Feni — have been passing miserable life at shelter houses.

They are now facing acute crises of food and pure drinking water. Although the government and different groups are providing relief materials, their amounts are insufficient for their needs.

At least five people died from drowning and snake bites on Tuesday, according to Health Emergency Operation Centre & Control Room of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).“Two people died from drowning in Netrokona, one in Kurigram and one in Moulvibazar while one died in snake bite in Moulvibazar,” it said.
