C T Online Desk: The mobile and internet connectivity in flood-affected five districts in the north and eastern parts of the country has yet to be re-established as a total of 976 towers of four mobile phone operators are down due to lack of electricity.
Besides, the mobile phone-based voice and internet connectivity, cable-based broadband internet connectivity in the regions are also facing disruptions since June 17 after the flood hit the regions.
The internet service providers are working to restore internet connectivity, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.
People in Sylhet, Netrokona, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj are going through intense sufferings due to heavy rainfall that caused flooding, said a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission press release on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, people in the region are facing trouble to access mobile network as well, it said.
Of 3,617 mobile phone towers of the telecom operators in the region, only 1,495 are functional.
The telecommunication companies have so far restored 1,146 towers while the rest 976 towers are yet to be reinstated, the BTRC said, adding that the telecom operators were working on restoration of the telecom towers.
Of the dysfunctional towers, the highest 477 are located in Sunamganj and the second highest 386 in Sylhet.
The district of Netrokona has 51 telecom towers, Habiganj 24 and Moulvibazar 38 – all remaining inoperative as per the BTRC press release.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited in a statement said that it had already restored landline connectivity with the flood-affected areas.
The BTCL has requested its customers to inform its call centre of any complaint about the landline connection in the flood-affected region.
