Boosting of Ctg Port capacity underscored

C T Online Desk: Emphasis has been laid on increasing the capacity of Chittagong Port to keep the country’s import-export trade dynamic. The overall economy, including the dynamics of trade and commerce of the country, is largely dependent on the capacity of the port.

Therefore, it will be difficult to keep pace without speedy opening of Patenga Container Terminal, construction of new jetty and yard including construction of Bay Terminal without taking some urgent steps. In view of the 135th founding anniversary of Chittagong Port, users have been urged to increase their capacity. Port officials say the country’s import-export trade is growing steadily.

Container handling at Chittagong port started in 1977 with 7 TEUS container handling, which has now surpassed 3.2 million TEUS. The normal growth of the port in container handling is close to 15 percent. In addition to handling a large number of containers, the port has to handle about 110 million tons of open goods. The port of Chittagong has to constantly prepare itself to handle this task. Stating that it is not possible to increase the existing port at the rate at which trade and commerce is increasing, the concerned people say that it is necessary to increase the capacity of the port by adopting new projects.
