The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Monday raised the retail price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder by Tk 223 to Tk 2,060, up from Tk 1,837.
It is the second consecutive monthly increase. In October, BERC raised the price by Tk 252 from Tk 1,585, after a Tk 13 reduction in September.
The commission has adjusted LPG prices monthly since April 2021, based on international propane and butane prices, notably Saudi Aramco’s contract rates, as well as shipping costs, traders’ premiums and the dollar exchange rate.
Consumers have complained of paying well above the official rates, with some retailers reportedly charging Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,500 per cylinder in October. BERC held a public hearing on October 29 on LPG pricing, storage and bottling costs, and distributor and retailer commissions.
