C T Online Desk: 1. Could you tell us about your background , who you are and what kind of music you represent?
You: My name is Jaya Rani Barman. I grew up in Paris and continue to reside here. Professionally, I am a logistic engineer, but at heart, I am a devoted student of music. I consider myself a versatile vocalist, yet my deepest dedication lies in Indian semi-classical music and Bangla folk. These genres represent not only my artistic identity but also the cultural and emotional heritage that I strive to uphold through my voice.
- How did your journey into music begin?
My journey began very early in life. Music felt like a gentle yet powerful force guiding me, and over time, it became my purpose. With the blessings of my teachers and my family specially my mother. I immersed myself in disciplined training. Even now, I view music not merely as a profession but as a sacred path of lifelong learning.
- When did you begin learning music, and who were your teachers?
I began learning music at a very early age. My mother recognised my inclination toward music and did everything in her capacity to nurture it. She is my first guru , she is blessed with an innate musical talent, and it was she who first introduced me to the world of music. My formal classical talim was under the guidance of Nilima Sen Gita, a gold medalist in Nazrulgeeti from Bangladesh, whose teaching has shaped me into the vocalist I am today. It is both a privilege and a blessing to remain under her continuous musical guidance. In recent times, I have had the honour of learning Indian classical music from Priyanka Mitra , an Indian classical pandit who, in herself, embodies music. I feel blessed and proud to call myself her student.
I am truly the result of the dedication and hard work of my guru maas. I remain deeply grateful to them for standing by me and guiding me with such devotion.
- Semi-classical and Bangla folk music each have unique textures and emotional depth. What draws you to these genres?
Both genres allow me to express devotion, emotion, and cultural richness. Semi-classical music offers a refined structure, while Bangla folk carries the soul of the people , their joys, sorrows, spirituality, and stories. What draws me most is their sincerity. When I sing, I feel a profound connection to the cultural and emotional roots of these traditions.
- What inspires you when you perform music?
My inspiration comes from life itself, from the wisdom of my gurus, and from the spiritual essence that music carries. I believe music is an offering ,a way to surrender one’s ego and let the emotion speak. Whether it is a delicate semi-classical composition or a heartfelt Bangla folk song, I strive to honour the authenticity of every note.
- What message do you hope your listeners receive through your music?
I hope my listeners feel peace, truth, and emotional connection. Both semi-classical and Bangla folk music touch the human heart in unique ways. If my singing helps someone feel understood or brings a moment of calm into their life, I feel grateful. My intention has always been to serve the music and allow it to reach people sincerely.
7 .Could you tell us about your recent or upcoming work?
Certainly. I am currently working on projects that draw from traditional compositions while introducing gentle, thoughtful interpretations. My aim is to maintain the purity of semi-classical music while also celebrating the raw emotional beauty of Bangla folk. Every project is crafted with devotion and deep respect for the heritage of these genres.
- What is the most meaningful part of being a vocalist for you?
The most meaningful aspect is the continuous journey of learning. Music is vast, and every day I discover something new. This humility and ongoing exploration keep me deeply devoted. For me, singing is meditation , a space where discipline, emotion, and gratitude come together.
- Is there a message you would like to share with your listeners?
With all sincerity, I would like to thank every listener who supports my musical journey. Your encouragement inspires me to keep learning and creating. I hope my music brings you comfort, reflection, and joy. It is a privilege to share my voice with you.
