Jamaat in Feni Demands New PR System for Next Election

C T Online Desk: Special Correspondent, Feni : Bangladesh’s political impasse took another turn as Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami organized a human chain protest in Feni on Wednesday (October 15, 2025), demanding the introduction of a Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system and the restoration of a neutral caretaker government to oversee national polls.

The protest, held at the Shaheed Minar premises on Truck Road, drew participation from local Jamaat leaders and activists, who formed a human chain displaying banners and placards pressing a 10-point charter of demands.

At the heart of the protest was a call to include the PR electoral model—which allocates parliamentary seats based on each party’s national vote share—into the proposed “July National Charter.” Party leaders argued that the current First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system leads to unequal representation and must be reformed for a truly democratic election process.

Although not prominently displayed on banners, the demand for a caretaker government remained a central theme, echoing broader opposition calls for a non-partisan interim administration. The caretaker provision, abolished in 2011, has long been a flashpoint between the ruling party and opposition blocs.

Jamaat leaders said their movement also encompasses economic and social issues, including the reduction of commodity prices, curbing inflation, and ensuring judicial and administrative neutrality.

The protest reflects the widening rift in Bangladesh’s political landscape, as opposition parties intensify pressure ahead of the next national elections, calling for what they describe as “inclusive and credible” polls under a neutral framework.
