C T Online Desk: Shakhawat Hossain Sabbir Special Correspondent : Italy has indicated that it is prepared to formally recognize the State of Palestine, pending the full implementation of a new peace plan brokered by the United States.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the moment as “historic,” expressing her country’s readiness to support Gaza’s reconstruction and the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.
“If this plan is fully implemented, there will be no remaining obstacle for Italy to recognize Palestine,” Meloni said, adding, “In short, Italy is ready to recognize Palestine — and we are very close to that moment.”
The statement comes amid major developments in the region.
Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest peace proposal, Israel and Hamas — which governs the Gaza Strip — agreed to a ceasefire after two years of intense conflict.
As part of the agreement, Hamas has released all 20 Israeli hostages it was holding, while Israel has freed 3,700 Palestinian prisoners and begun withdrawing its troops from Gaza.
Meloni also praised President Trump for his diplomatic efforts, calling the ceasefire “a great achievement” for the United States.
“We hope to see President Trump succeed in mediating peace in other global conflicts, including the war between Russia and Ukraine,” she added.
Analysts say Italy’s potential recognition of Palestine could mark a significant shift in Europe’s stance on the Middle East peace process, signaling renewed momentum toward a two-state solution after years of stalled diplomacy.
