New hope of trust, OC Shamsuzzaman

C T Online Desk:  Engr. Mokarrom Billah from Feni: At Feni Sadar Model Police Station, the reluctance and distrust that once existed in the minds of the public: Significant changes have taken place there in just six months. The main responsibility of the police is: ensuring the safety of people’s lives and property, suppressing crime, and maintaining law and order. For this reason, the general public always expects people-friendly services.

To bridge the gap between expectations and reality, he is working day and night: Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station, Mohammad Shamsuzzaman. For this reason, within a short period of time, a new trend has emerged in the operations of the police station, which has resulted in the restoration of trust among the general public.

After the fall of the fascists on 5th August, the Feni Model Police Station was destroyed by student and public protests. Amid the burnt-out buildings, burnt furniture, and a panicked atmosphere, OC Shamsuzzaman quickly activated operations.

In a short time, the police station was re-established as a public-friendly service center. After OC Shamsuzzaman took charge of the police station on February 19, 2025, he announced at the upazila monthly meeting that there would be no place for bribery or brokering in the police station.

On his instructions, a help desk was opened at the police station, where people can file GDs, cases or police clearances without harassment. With regular monitoring, this process is becoming more effective, and service seekers are now receiving police services with greater ease than before.

Not only administrative changes, but also activity has been seen in curbing crime. Police station sources said that in the last six months, more than 500 accused and 400 warrants have been arrested in a total of 22 cases, including seven murder cases related to the student movement against discrimination. In addition, eighty drug dealers have also been arrested. The regular anti-drug and counter-terrorism operations have also created a sense of relief among the locals.

OC Shamsuzzaman said, “We are trying to provide services while maintaining good behavior and professionalism with people. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Police, the beat policing program has been further strengthened. As a result, it is possible to maintain the overall picture of law and order.”

Other sources say that through beat policing activities, long-standing local disputes have been resolved. The police are also active in suppressing violence against women and children, recovering drugs, controlling juvenile gangs, and preventing extortion and land grabbing. In addition, by participating in social and religious activities, the police’s relationship with the public has improved.
