C T Online Desk: There are around 16 million people with disabilities in the country, which makes them 10% of the total population. While that might not seem like much, for their families and loved ones, this 10% makes up a huge number. For many of these people, securing a livelihood becomes extremely difficult.
As such, the recent job fair — organized by the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the leadership of the ICT department — that was held for the employment of disabled people that saw 52 trained personnel getting placed in various organizations, with 310 people shortlisted, is a step in the right direction and the sort of initiatives that we should be seeing more of. Owing to the huge number of people that live with disabilities, fairs like this should be arranged more frequently, and necessary steps have to be taken to bring more disabled people under the fold.
Disabilities are often caused in one’s birth, and it is not right that someone be barred from taking part in society because of something that they had no control over. For a majority of cases, these disabilities affect a limited sphere in a person’s life, meaning that if accommodation for that tiny sphere is constructed, disabled people can live their life to the fullest.
Giving them jobs would not only ensure that the economy will get a boost, but it would also mean that the authorities would be making a difference in the lives of the disabled. For the creation of an equitable nation, it would be an absolute disservice if we did not take into account people with disabilities — who merely got unlucky and should not, under any circumstances, be penalized because of it.
