C T Online Desk: Members from the Hindu community ended their first day of protests at the capital’s Shahbagh intersection after nearly three hours, and demonstrations are likely to resume Saturday to press home eight-point demand.
Around 4pm Friday, members from the minority group blocked the intersection, causing acute traffic gridlock on all sides of the crucial point, demanding speedy trial of attacks on Hindu properties since the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led autocratic government, among other issues.
Sanatani Adikhar Andolon, an alliance of different Hindu activist groups, organised the movement as their demands were not met despite assurances from the interim government.
Law enforcers were present on the scene.
The eight demands include: forming tribunals for ensuring speedy justice against attacks on Hindu establishments since 5 August, providing compensation and rehabilitation services to the affected Hindus, formulating minority protection act, forming minority affairs ministry, elevating the status of Hindu Religious Welfare Trust to that of a foundation, doing the same for other minority religious community trusts, recovering properties endowed in the name of Hindu gods and divine entities under a new act, properly implanting the property reparation act and extending the Durga Puja vacation to five days.
