C T Online Desk: The floods have distressed more than 350,000 people in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura, Kamalganj, Rajnagar, and Juri upazilas.
Although the flash flood waters in the Moulvibazar district have receded slightly, the suffering of the low-lying area people has increased due to the food and pure water shortage.
Especially the people living on the banks of rivers and haors of the district have suffered more.
Flood waters have entered low-lying areas after breaching embankments at 20 to 22 places on the Manu, Dhalai and Feni rivers.
The flood victims said the waters swallowed their houses, roads, and agricultural fields. Now, the water has receded, but their suffering worsens as time goes on. The flood situation has also worsened in the district’s coastal areas of Hakaluki, Kawadighi, and Hail Haor.
Some people, including Ashik Mia, Rahim Mia, Sufia Begum, and Md Rason Mia, said they have been sheltering with their families and livestock at Kadamhata High School and Kadamhat Government Primary since Wednesday afternoon.
They are extremely worried about food for themselves and their livestock.
According to the Moulvibazar Water Development Board, the Manu River is flowing 147cm below the danger level at the Railway Bridge area.
The Manu River is flowing 66cm above the danger level at Chandnighat, while the Dholai River is flowing 239cm below the danger level at the railway bridge area.
The Kushiyara River is 7cm above the danger level at Sherpur Point, and the Juri River is 180cm above the danger level in Bhabanipur.
According to the district administration, 2,37,095 people are flood-affected in the seven upazilas, and 8,561 have taken shelter in 47 cyclone centres.
A total of 212 villages have been flooded in 50 areas, including municipalities and unions.
On behalf of the administration, 285 tons of rice and a cash allocation of Tk45 lakh were distributed in seven upazilas, of which Tk 20.50 lakh have been distributed.
There are 62 medical teams. The relief stored is Tk24.50 lakh in cash and 1,034 tons of rice.
