C T Online Desk: Chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Harunor Rashid was criticized for his activities, particularly for feeding people at his office, at the meeting of the 14-party alliance, led by Awami League at the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganabhaban on Monday night.
Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting and the senior leader of the ruling party-led alliance was present there.
Sources from the meeting disclosed that several leaders, including Workers Party of Bangladesh President Rashed Khan Menon and Toriqat Federation Chairman Syed Najibul Bashar Maizbhandari, criticized the DMP DB chief Harunor Rashid’s actions.
They specifically took issue with his Facebook posts showing him dining with six quota movement coordinators at his office.
On Sunday, Harunor Rashid posted several pictures on Facebook, captioned: “Coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were not safe. So I brought them to the DB office and spoke to them.”
The coordinators of the quota reform movement later read out a written statement from the DB office, urging the withdrawal of the movement.
Other coordinators claimed that the coordinators in custody were forced to announce the withdrawal of the movement.
High Court criticized the government for Harun’s activities, which has brought criticism at home and abroad, said 14-party alliance leaders.
In the meeting, Rashed Khan Menon said: “Harun’s actions proved that political problems cannot be solved by the bureaucrats. Political problems have to be solved by the politicians.”
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the High Court seeking an order for the release of six reform movement coordinators from the custody of the Detective Branch of police.
The High Court on Monday, while commenting on a video of six detained quota reform movement coordinators eating with DB chief Harunor Rashid, said do not mock the nation by taking people to the Detective Branch’s office and then seating them at a dining table.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon made the remark addressing the state during the hearing of a writ petition.
At one point, Additional Attorney General Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury mentioned that he had seen on TV that these six coordinators were eating with forks and spoons.
In response, the court said: “Who asked you to do this? Why did you do this? Do not mock the nation. You take someone into custody and then seat them at a dining table.”
However, meeting sources revealed that the 14-party leaders criticized DB chief Harun’s activities, specifically mentioning his numerous dining pictures and videos. In response, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also seemed unhappy with Harun’s activities.
According to the sources, DB chief Harun may face consequences for his populist activities, and action might be taken against him.
