C T Online Desk: Police detained at least 20 people from Mirpur and Dhanmondi in the capital when quota reform protesters attempted to demonstrate.
Md Refatul Islam, assistant commissioner of the New Market Zone, said that 10 individuals were detained in front of Star Kabab in Dhanmondi.
Additionally, at least 10 people were detained from Mirpur 10, Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Munshi Sabbir.
Around 12:30pm, a police officer on duty at ECB Chattar said that some protesters were throwing bricks from the alleys. The police later dispersed them and detained a few individuals.
Police also detained several protesters who had gathered at Dhaka’s Purana Paltan at noon on Monday as part of their scheduled demonstration.
In Uttara, protesters gathered at BNS Centre at 9 am but were dispersed by the police when they attempted to hold a rally.
The protesters took to the streets on Monday morning after rejecting the announcement from the six coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, who declared that the protest had ended as their demands were met.
The coordinators made this announcement in a video message while in the custody of the Detective Branch of police.
Following this, other coordinators stated that the movement would continue, claiming the withdrawal statement had been extracted under duress.
After the announcement of a protest program on social media, additional law enforcement officers were deployed in several areas of the capital on Monday.
According to social media, protest programs were supposed to take place at eight locations in Dhaka on Monday. These locations were Science Lab, Gate No. 8 of North South University, Press Club, BNS Centre in Uttara, Mirpur 10, ECB Chattar in Mirpur, Rampura, and Mohakhali.
From the morning, police were seen deployed in these areas. Additionally, helicopters from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were seen patrolling.
Members of the army were also seen patrolling various roads in the capital.
