C T Online Desk: Four cases have been registered in connection with the clashes between police, Chhatra League, and Jubo League with protesting students in Chittagong on Tuesday, demanding reform of quotas in government jobs.
The clashes resulted in three deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Around 7,500 people have been named as unknown accused in these cases. The cases were filed on Wednesday morning, and the police have already detained several individuals following raids at various locations.
These four cases have been filed in two police stations in the city – one at Khulshi police station and the remaining three at Panchlaish police station. Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Saiful Islam confirmed this information.
Panchlaish police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Santosh Kumar Chakma said three separate cases were filed at Panchlaish police station regarding the clash in the Muradpur area on Tuesday afternoon. Around 7,000 people have been accused in these cases. Out of the three cases, the police have filed two, and the third was filed by the mother of one of the injured. The plaintiff in the two police cases is SI Deepak Dewan of Panchlaish police station.
He also said that 6,000 to 6,500 people have been named as unknown accused in the case related to the three deaths. Additionally, 150 individuals have been named as unidentified accused in an Explosives Act case. Sumi Dhar, the mother of an injured person named Emon Dhar, filed a case naming 150 unknown accused.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (PR) Kazi Md Tareq Aziz mentioned that another case has been registered at Khulshi police station concerning the clash. A relative of an injured person filed this case as the plaintiff, naming 500 to 600 unknown accused with one specific individual mentioned.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Saiful Islam said: “Four cases have been registered in connection with the clash. There will be more cases. Attempts are being made to identify those involved in the incident by reviewing CCTV footage. I have instructed police officers to ensure that no innocent people are accused in these cases.”
