10,000 people waterlogged in Baghaichhari

C T Online Desk: As the water level of Kachalong River has increased due to onrush of upstream water amid torrential rain, the low-lying areas of Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati have been inundated which left around 10,000 people stranded in water.

The communication system of six unions with the upazila headquarters has been suspended.

A student named Krittiva Chakma went missing after he was washed away in the Kachalong river in Narikel Bagan area of ​​Baghaichhari on Tuesday afternoon. He could not be traced yet.

It is reported that Sadar, Barbindu Ghat, Master Para, West Muslim Block, Lailya Ghona, Uluchhari, F Block, Rupkari and Old Marishya villages of the upazila have been flooded.

The upazila administration has opened 55 shelters for the waterlogged people.

Hundreds of affected people have taken shelter there. Baghaichhari municipality and upazila administration are providing them food in the morning and night.

Locals said that fish from the hundreds of ponds in the upazila were washed away by the river water, and the crops were severely damaged.

They said that the river water has reduced a little from the areas. It will take more time for the situation to normalize.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of Baghaichhari Press Club Md Gias Uddin said that about 10,000 people are marooned in water in the entire upazila. Baghaichhari Sadar still has knee-deep water

Due to this, the people here are suffering a lot.

Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shirin Akhter said that the water has not yet receded. Upazila administration has continued to support the victims.

She said that the affected people have taken shelter in centres. They are being served khichuri twice a day.

Meanwhile, Chittagong Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has postponed the Thursday’s HSC examination of Kachalong Government Degree College Centre of Baghaichhari Upazila of Rangamati due to the flood situation.

Chittagong Education Board informed this information in a letter given to Rangamati deputy commissioner on Wednesday.

It is said in the letter that Thursday’s English 1st paper examination has been postponed at the centre.
