Puja shopping gains momentum in Country

C T Online Desk: Shopping centres and stores in Khulna city are witnessing a huge rush of shoppers ahead of Durga Puja, a major religious festival of the Hindu community.

Sales have increased since Mahalaya and are getting better this year compared to the last, amid favourable weather and political situation, sellers said.

The markets in the city are already in a festive look ahead of the five-day long Durga Puja celebration which will begin tomorrow.

Fashion houses have brought in new collections focusing on puja, with many brands offering up to 60 percent discounts.

Monoranjon Saha, owner of Saha Bostraloy in Boro Bazar, said Jamdani and Katan sarees sell 10 times more during Durga Puja compared to other Hindu festivals.

“We are also selling three-pieces, lehengas, dhotis, and panjabis,” he added.

This correspondent saw crowds of buyers in the city’s Shibbari intersection, New Market, Dakbangla intersection, Picture Palace, Boro Bazar, Jalil Super Market, Railway Market, Nixon Market, and Khalishpur Chitrali Bazar.

Many shoppers were coming from neighbouring districts including Satkhira and Bagerhat.

Sammridhi Swasty Das of the city’s Daulatpur area came with her mother Doly Kundu to Shibbari intersection for shopping. She said she bought dresses for all her family members.

Obaidul Rahman, owner of Arafat Fashion in Nixon Market, said average sales was good.

“This market is usually closed on Fridays, but on the occasion of puja, we kept it open on last Friday due to the rush,” he added.
