No political pressure on Election Commission, says CEC Awal

C T Online Desk: Newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has ruled out any kind of pressure from political parties.

“The commission will function independently as it is governed by its own laws and regulations,” he said on Tuesday.

His remarks came while speaking to the media after paying homage to the 1971 war heroes at the National Memorial at Savar.

The new commission will oversee the 12th national elections.

“We will start discussing [within the commission] on strategies to approach the political parties. We hope the political leadership will come to a resolution through talks among them,” said CEC Awal.

Asked whether there were any pressure from political parties, he replied: “I suffer from high blood pressure and there’s this [new] responsibility [of the Election Commission].”
