C T Online Desk: Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said today that renewable energy is the key sector of China-Bangladesh economic cooperation.
He came up with the statement while addressing a ceremony marking the successful operation of the Cox’s Bazar Wind Power Project.
The ceremony, attended by Md. Habibur Rahman, Senior Secretary of Power Division, and Md. Jashim Uddin, Bangladesh Ambassador to China, showcased the significance of the collaboration between the two nations in the crucial sector of new energy.
Ambassador Yao emphasised the pivotal role of new energy in the economic partnership between China and Bangladesh.
To this end, he mentioned that this sentiment was echoed in the meeting between President Xi Jinping of China and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 23, during the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.
He stated that both leaders pledged to further advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, leveraging the economic complementarity of their nations and intensifying collaboration in the new energy sector.
The Cox’s Bazar Wind Power Project, a monumental initiative, represents the historic introduction of wind power by Chinese enterprises into Bangladesh.
Ambassador Yao also highlighted China’s comprehensive industry chain, extensive construction and operation experience, and technological, capital, and talent advantages.
Recognising Bangladesh’s abundant solar, wind, and tidal-flat resources coupled with its substantial power demand, he said that China is committed to sharing its expertise and technology.
With Cox’s Bazar Wind Power Project being the first large-scale operation, its successful operation is expected to generate up to 145 gigawatt hours of electricity annually.
This achievement is poised to play a pivotal role in elevating the proportion of renewable energy in Bangladesh and fostering the extensive use of new energy sources.
