Waterlogging makes life miserable in Chittagong

C T Online Desk: Five days of continuous rain has caused waterlogging in low-lying areas of Chittagong, resulting in immense suffering for the people of the port city with roads and lanes submerged for the last two days.

Water entered homes and various businesses, including the house of Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury.

Ujjal Kanti Nath, assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Chittagong office, said the city saw 57mm of rain from 6am to noon on Saturday.

Besides, there were high tides in the Karnaphuli River from 9:46am.

He said it is raining in the city under the influence of low pressure. Rainfall may continue for a few more days. There is a possibility of landslides in areas where there is heavy rainfall.

The road from Muradpur to Bahaddarhat in the city has accumulated knee-deep to waist-deep water. Many vehicles, including CNG-run autorickshaws, have become dysfunctional in the water. A long traffic jam ensued on both sides of the road.

Water also entered the ground floor of a local Bangladesh Water Development Board building. The ground floor of Chittagong Wasa also went underwater. There was waist-deep water in front of the mayor’s house.

Along with this, new areas went underwater in Saturday’s rain.

Besides, products are perishing in many business establishments due to waterlogging.

Apart from this, people have been stranded in water since morning due to waterlogging in Baklia Miakhan Nagar, Chawkbazar, Sholoshahar, Halishahar, Muradpur, Chandgaon, Bolirhat, Chhota Pool, Boro Pool, Mother and Child Hospital Area, CDA Residential Area, Shanti Bagh Residential area, Riazuddin Bazar, Mehdibagh, Sholoshahar Gate No 2 area of the city.
