5 killed in Rohingya camp gunfight

C T Online Desk: Five Rohingyas were killed in firing by two groups at Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar early Friday.

The deceased are Anwar Hossain, 24, Mohammad Hamim, 16, residents of Camp-8 West, Nurul Amin, 24 of Camp-13 and Md Nazimullah of Camp-10. Another person has not yet been identified.

Ukhiya police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Ali, confirming the information, said that three bodies were recovered after receiving reports of firing between two Rohingya groups in the camp early in the morning.

Two other injured persons were taken to the hospital where they died. The operation to arrest those involved in the incident is continuing, he added.

The Rohingyas told Bangla Tribune that the conflict between the two groups had been going on for some days over the control of the camp. In this situation, the firing started between the two groups early morning.

The names of two conflicting groups – Arsa and Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) have come up in Rohingya’s speech regarding the conflict.

When asked, APBn-8 Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Farooq Ahmed told Bangla Tribune that the internal conflicts of multiple armed groups in the camp were increasing the killings. Primarily, it was confirmed that all the deceased were members of Arsa.

Those involved in the crime will be brought under the law. Operation is on to nab these killers, he added.
