Flood situation may worsen in northeast

C T Online Desk: The flood situation in the country’s northeastern region may worsen while the northern region is likely to see flooding due to the swelling of major rivers.

Someshwari, Surma and Old Surma rivers were flowing 24cm, 16cm and 3cm above the danger levels at Kalmakanda, Sunamganj and Derai points respectively.

The low-lying areas of Sunamganj and Netrokona were inundated following the rise in the water level, triggering a short-term flood.

As heavy rainfall has been predicted in the adjoining upstream areas, the Teesta, Dharala and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region may rise rapidly during the next 48 hours from 9:00am on Monday, said Partho Protim Barua, assistant engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The Teesta may cross the danger level at the Dalia point in the next 24 hours, causing a short-term flood in the low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts, he said.

The Ganges-Padma rivers are in a rising trend and they may swell further in the next 48 hours, Partho said.

Except Kushiyara, Manu and Khowai, the major rivers in the northeastern region of the country are in a rising trend and that is why the ongoing flood situation in Sunamganj and Netrokona districts may deteriorate, he said.

However, as the chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northeastern and adjoining upstream regions of the country is unlikely, the ongoing flood situation may improve afterwards.

There are 109 water level stations under the FFWC monitoring. Among them, water has increased in 73 stations, decreased in 35 and remained steady in one station.

Meanwhile, the water in three stations has crossed the danger level, which has triggered floods in two districts.

The lower-lying areas of Sunamganj have been flooded due to heavy rainfall and the onrush of hilly surges.

Thousands of people have already been marooned as the water of the Surma River was flowing above the danger level at every point of the district.

Sadar, Dowarabazar, Chhatak, Bishwambarpur, Tahirpur and Shantiganj upazilas have been inundated by the floodwater.

Many low-lying areas of Sunamganj municipality have also gone under water.

Erosion by major rivers has taken a serious turn at many places across the country, causing immense sufferings for people.

Severe erosion has occurred with the increase in the water level of the Jamuna River for the last several days. River erosion has taken serious turn at Chowhali, Shahjadpur and Enayetpur of Sirajganj district.

Schools, homesteads and crop fields have already been damaged and went into the river. Erosion victims of the areas are passing life under open sky with uncertainty in their eyes.
