C T Online Desk: Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district for coal-fired Payra Thermal Power Plant while production at Rampal Thermal Power Plant in Bagerhat remains suspended for maintenance.
Deputy director of traffic department at Payra port Azizur Rahman on Sunday confirmed the media about the arrival of coal-laden second vessel at Payra port, New Age Correspondent in Barishal reported.
According to the port officials, MV Pavo Brave left Balikpanan port of Indonesia about a week ago, and arrived at Payra port around 10:30am on the day.
As soon as the ship reached outer anchorage, it was piloted to the inner anchorage, Payra port official Golam Rabbani said, adding that coal unloading began through lighterage.
Georges Talukder, executive engineer of Payra Thermal Power Plant, said that they would release some coal through lighters soon after the ship had arrived at the inner anchorage.
At least 15 more coal-laden ships will arrive at the power plant one after another, added the engineer.
The 1,320MW Payra power plant was temporarily closed on June 5 due to coal shortage.
On June 22, a vessel MV Athena arrived at the port with 41,207 tonnes of coal that helped one unit of power plant to go into production on June 25.
Power production at Rampal Thermal Power Plant in Bagerhat has been suspended since Friday evening due to maintenance work, United News of Bangladesh reported from Bagerhat.
Syed Ekramullah, managing director of Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company, said that the energy production at the power plant halted at 8:45pm on Friday due to inspection and maintenance work.
‘We have suspended the production due to maintenance, inspection work and technical glitch from June 30 night and we’ll try to resume the production on June 4, 5 or 6,’ he said.
Talking about the coal situation, Ekramullah said that there was plenty of coal and a huge quantity of coal would arrive on June 5 by ship.
The 1,320 MW coal-fired power plant has been set up at a cost of approximately USD 2 billion and is located at Rampal in Bagerhat under Khulna division of Bangladesh.
The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project was constructed under the Indian government’s concessional financing scheme.
On September 6, 2022, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi jointly unveiled unit-1 of the power plant at Rampal.
