C T Online Desk: A stock of 2,700 tonnes of cotton at Unitex’s warehouse in Sitakunda is making it difficult to extinguish the fire, administration officials said.
Eight fire engines, four units of the army, four units of the navy, and two units of the air force are working to douse the fire, officials said. Besides, four firefighting units of the BGB are also on their way to join the efforts, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Touhidul Islam, assistant commissioner of Chattogram district administration, said, “The fire is still out of control. It is burning at various places in the warehouse. Despite the continuous efforts of the fire service for the last 13 hours, the fire has not been extinguished.”
The fire broke out at 10:30am yesterday at the warehouse near Nemson Container Depot in the Chhoto Kumira area of Sitakunda.
Welding work was being carried out at the warehouse over the last one week.
Fire Service and administration officials said that the fire started from a welding spark.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Sitakunda Shahadat Hossain visited the spot around noon yesterday.
Sitakunda Model Police Station officer-in-charge and senior station officer of Sitakunda Fire Service and Civil Defence have been stationed at the site of the fire since then and were supervising the firefighting activities.
According to district administration sources, Deputy Commissioner Of Chattogram Abul Bashar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman has been on the spot since 6:30pm yesterday.
