5 killed in Sitakunda oxygen plant fire

C T Online Desk: At least five people were killed and over 30 injured in a massive fire broke out at an oxygen plant following an explosion in Kadam Rasul (Keshabpur) area of Chittagong’s Sitakunda upazila on Saturday afternoon.

The fire started at Seema Oxygen Plant around 4:30pm after a big bang, said Sultan Mahmud, senior officer of Kumira Fire Service Station.

On information, nine units of Sitakunda and Kumira Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 5.40pm, he added.

However, the reason behind the blast and fire could not be known immediately, said the fire official.

Meanwhile, Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the hospital police outpost said, around 25 individuals have been hospitalized at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital with injuries sustained in the Sitakunda explosion.

Police have yet to confirm the identities of the deceased.

“So far, I have got information about three deaths, we’re looking inside,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sitakunda police station Tofayel Ahmed.
