7 killed as cyclone Sitrang batters parts of Bangladesh

C T Online Desk: At least seven people, including three members of a family, died in the collapse of a brick railing and trees as Cyclonic Sitrang crossed the Barishal-Chattogram coast near Bhola around midnight on Monday but weakened rapidly into a depression by giving precipitation.

The incidents occurred in Dhaka, Nagalkot in Cumilla Daulatkhan and Charfesson in Bhola and Lohagara in Narail on Monday.

In Bhola, a man and a woman died after trees fell on them in Doulatkhan and Char Fasson upazilas.

The deceased were identified as Monir, 30, of Hazariganj area of Char Fasson upazila and Bibi Khadiza, wife of Khadem Ali of Bhola’s municipality area no. 5.

Khadiza died on the spot around 7pm during the storm caused by the approaching Cyclone Sitrang, said Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Doulatkhan Police Station.

Monir was riding on his motorcycle and died around 8:30pm after a tree fell on him amid the stormy weather caused by Cyclone Sitrang, added the OC.

In Cumilla, three members of a family died as a tree collapsed on their house in Hesakhal West para of Nangalkot upazila in Cumilla on Monday night.

The deceased are Nijam Uddin, his wife and daughter.

A tree collapsed on their house at around 11.30pm when Cyclone Sitrang was lashing the country. The local administration and people rescued and took them to the Upazila Health Complex where they died, said officer-in-Charge (OC) Nangalkot Thana Faruk Hossain.

In Dhaka, a rickshawpuller and a motorcyclist were injured after the brick railing on the rooftop of a four-storey building collapsed on Maneshwar Road at Jigatola of Hazaribagh.

Locals rescued the two and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared the rickshaw puller dead, according to Inspector Bachchu Mia of the hospital’s police outpost.

The victims could not be identified immediately.

In Narail, an woman was killed as a branch of a mahogany tree broke and fell on her outside Rural Savings Bank near the Upazila council office on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Morjina Begum, 40, Md Nasir Uddin, chief of Lohagara Police Station in Narail, said.
