C T Online Desk: A total of 30,029 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country as 922 more people were admitted to health facilities after being infected with the mosquito-borne viral disease in the past 24 hours till Saturday morning, which was also the highest single day reported figure this year.

In the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Saturday, two more people died of dengue, of them, one died in Dhaka city and another in Chattogram district, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

Of the fresh hospitalisation, 520 patients were reported in Dhaka city and 402 in other places outside the capital.

A total of 13,937 patients or 46.41 per cent of this year’s dengue hospitalisation were reported in the first 22 days of October  showing an unbridled rise in dengue infections.

The mosquito-borne viral disease killed 112 people this year, of which 57 people or about 51 per cent of deaths were reported in 22 days of October, 34 in September, 11 in August, nine in July and one was reported in June while no death was reported between January and May, according to the DGHS press release.

Of the total 112 deaths this year, 66 died in Dhaka city, one in Narsingdi, 36 in Chattogram, five in Barishal, two in Khulna and two in Mymensingh divisions.

Excepting October, the number of hospitalised dengue patients was 9,911 in September, followed by 3,571 in August, 1,571 in July, 737 in June, 163 in May, 23 in April, 20 each in February and March, and 126 in January, according to the official data.

A total of 21, 424 patients or 71.34 per cent of this year’s total hospitalisation were reported in Dhaka city.

At least 3,404 dengue patients, including 2,328 at 52 public and private hospitals in the capital, are now undergoing treatment, said the DGHS press release.

In April, the health directorate in a pre-monsoon survey found a higher density of Aedes mosquitoes in the capital compared to that in  2021, with experts predicting a worsening dengue situation this year in the city unless preventive steps were taken.

The DGHS revealed its monsoon survey in September and found the mosquito density twice as high in Dhaka city as in the pre-monsoon survey.
