Cox’s Bazar to have large wind power plant

C T Online Desk: After the initial success of the wind powered power plant at Qutubdia, this time the country’s largest and most modern wind power plant is at Khurushkul in Cox’s Bazar. Construction of 22 turbines with a power generation capacity of 60 MW has started to meet the electricity demand of Cox’s Bazar region. The equipment of this project, which is being implemented at a cost of 900 crore taka, is being brought from China.  A Chinese-flagged ship anchored at Chittagong port carrying giant fans for the project’s wind turbines.
According to sources, the government started the implementation of a wind power project with a production capacity of only 1 megawatt in Kutubdia, an island isolated from the mainland of the country, in 2007. At that time, an initiative was taken to generate 1 megawatt of electricity with 50 turbines at a cost of about 15 crore taka in a vast area next to the embankment of Tablarchar village in Ali Akbar Dale Union of Kutubdia. But before the project could see the light of day, it was damaged by Cyclone  in 2010.

In 2016, an initiative was taken to restart the wind power plant, which had been almost abandoned for a long time. As a part of this, a wind power plant with 20 turbines was set up in a new shape at a cost of 23 crore 77 lakh taka. Through this, 2 megawatts of electricity is produced and supplied to the locals.
After the initial success of the wind power plant, the government took the initiative to produce electricity on a larger scale. It was decided to generate 60 MW of electricity using wind and supply it to the National Grid. Under the project, 22 wind turbines are being constructed at Khurushkul in Cox’s Bazar. The machinery of this Tk 900 crore project is being brought from China. Yesterday, the ship arrived at Chittagong port with about 900 tons of machinery including huge fans of the project.
