Low-lying areas submerged in city under water

C T Online Desk: Important roads and lanes have been submerged. Drainage and dirty water are now on the road. Boats have to be used for transportation as most of the roads have been submerged in the last 3 days of rains. Many houses and shops have been flooded due to inadequate drainage system. This is destroying furniture and daily necessities. The stove is not burning.

In the commercial area of ​​Chaktai-Khatunganj some products got wet. Mohra, Hamidchar, Char Rangamatia, Chandgaon, Bakalia, Chawkbazar, Katalganj, Kapasgola, Badurtala, Bahaddarhat, Bus Terminal, Kaptai Road Head, Khwaja Road, Miyakhan Nagar, Probatak Mor are on the banks of Karnafuli River in the rain. Waterlogging has occurred in Mehedibagh, Gate No. 2 of Sholashahar, Muradpur, Agrabad Commercial Area, Agrabad Access Road, Chhotapul-Barapul, Gosaildanga, Greater Halishahar, different areas of Halishahar. Some of the main roads in these areas have been submerged in knees, waists and chests.

ThePatenga   meteorological department said that the extension of the monsoon axis extends from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and central Bangladesh to Assam. An extension of this is located in the North Bay. Monsoon winds are active over Bangladesh and moderate in North Bay. As a result, it may rain for one or two days. Work is underway on 3 projects in the city at a cost of Taka 9,546 crore to alleviate waterlogging.

Of these, in August 2016, the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) approved the project ‘Re-excavation, expansion, renovation and development of canals to reduce waterlogging in Chittagong city’ at a cost of Taka 5,617 crore. It is being implemented by the 34th Engineering Construction Brigade of the Army. On April 25 of the same year, at a cost of Tk 2,310 crore, the CDA approved the project ‘Construction of road cum  dam from Kalurghat bridge along Chaktai canal along the banks of Karnafuli river’.

The company started construction of the project from  last year. In addition, the Water Development Board got approval for another project in 2019 at a cost of Tk 1,620 crore to alleviate the water shortage in the city. In this project, besides installing regulators at the mouths of 23 canals, a 19 km long flood protection wall will be constructed on the banks of Karnafuli. Its work is also going on.

Besides, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) undertook various projects for cleaning canals and drains at different times. However, due to the complaints of the city dwellers, the slowness of the mega project and various inconsistencies in resolving waterlogging, they are suffering from waterlogging year after year.

Besides, city dwellers sufferings more than the rain. Patenga Meteorological Office recorded only 29.2 mm of rain till 9 am.yesterday.  Karnafuli river tide, rain, hill slope made the situation worst in the lower part of the city. There was knee-deep water in someone’s house. There was water in some alleys. School-college students, parents, working people and pedestrians have been suffering in the ditch, silt, mud and yellow sand of the road.
