C T Online Desk: An environmental group called People’s Voice has called for the formation of a task force and special tribunals to ensure speedy punishment of the perpetrators.
The demand was made at a rally held on Sunday (June 11) at the intersection of Cheragi Hills in the city to commemorate the victims of the 2008 landslides in Chittagong metropolis and Rangamati and Chittagong in 2016. The environmental group People’s Voice has been calling for the day to be declared “Mountain Protection Day” every year since the June 11, 2006 landslide that killed 128 people in Chittagong.
Professional Coordinating Council and Khelaghor Chittagong Metropolitan President Dr. AQM Sirajul Islam said, “So far we have seen hundreds of investigation committees.” But the report no longer saw the light of day. The mountains are a natural resource not only of Chittagong but of the whole country. No one has the right to destroy this nature. The hill has been cut and finished, today Karnafuli is on the way to be filled. This is not just a mountain cutting, it is a deep conspiracy to destroy our nature.
If the government officials do not come down to the people and protect the mountain river, there is danger in front. CPB Chittagong District President Prof Ashok Saha said, “Now, who, where, how, what will be eaten in the country is going on.” Economy, politics, education and culture are suffering. Those in power do not suffer from so much looting, ordinary people die. A bleak future awaits us.
