Death toll from Ctg container fire static at 41, flame yet to be doused

C T Online Desk: The fire that broke out at the BM container depot at Sitakunda in Chattogram could not be brought under control even after 60 hours. Several containers are still burning.

According to district administration, the devastating fire killed around 41 people and wounded several hundreds. However, the unofficial counts claim 49 deaths so far while many were missing.

The fire service said they will continue search operation for the missing after the fire is doused. However, there are doubts as to whether the missing bodies will be found there.

Bangladesh Army at a briefing said, the fire is under control but not fully doused.

Till 9:00 am on Tuesday, it was seen that five big units of the fire service were working to tame down the fire. Four chemical containers have been removed to a safer place. However, the fire service says that even if the containers are removed, there is a risk of explosion. The firefighting unit will work with the chemical containers after the fire is brought under control.

It is learned that 163 injured people have been admitted to the burn units of various hospitals in Chattogram and Dhaka. Conditions of many of them are reportedly critical. The victims, who were identified during the night, have been handed over to the families under supervision of the district administration.
